  • The history of Rold Gl. Kro

    wave

Rold Gl. Kro, nestled in the scenic landscapes of Northern Jutland, is one of Denmark’s oldest inns, granted royal privileges on 4th of June 1747 by King Frederick V. Since then, the inn has had a long and fascinating history, passing through many owners and different eras.

In the late 19th century, the inn became an integral part of the Miehe circus family’s life. After being turned away on a stormy evening, the Miehe family later decided to purchase the inn, transforming it into their winter retreat. Adjacent to the inn is the Circus Museum, Denmark’s only preserved wooden circus building. The museum offers a glimpse into 200 years of circus history – a captivating story of hard work and dreams behind the dazzling lights of the ring.

Following the Miehe family’s tenure, the inn changed hands several times, with each owner adding their own touch to its historic charm.

However, in 2018, Rold Gl. Kro went bankrupt and remained vacant for a few years until 2020, when it was acquired by Jørgen Bak Rasmussen, a passionate entrepreneur from Hobro. For Jørgen, the inn is more than just a business – it is a lifelong dream come true. His motto, "We sell three things: experiences, experiences, and experiences," is reflected in the unique atmosphere he has cultivated. The inn provides a distinctive setting for everything from private celebrations to holiday getaways, always with an emphasis on intimacy, tradition, and the surrounding nature.

With 26 rooms featuring private enclosed terraces, the inn warmly welcomes both two- and four-legged guests. The on-site agility course and direct access to the 8,000-hectare Rold Forest make it an ideal destination for dog owners, while mountain bikers and nature lovers also find excellent facilities.

Rold Gl. Kro has undergone a transformation while preserving its historical essence. From the newly added luxury suite with a four-poster bed to the nearby old dairy, which is being extensively renovated into modern conference facilities, the inn seamlessly blends heritage with contemporary comfort.

With great passion and deep respect for history, Jørgen Bak Rasmussen and his team are writing a new chapter in the inn’s story – a chapter filled with unforgettable experiences and cherished memories for guests from near and far
